Location: Catarina/Webb County, TX
This $5M project was to construct a new 4,500 ft runway on undeveloped private property. The project included, runway siting alternatives, extensive drainage analysis and design, coordination with Medina Electric and Webb County for extension of the overhead electric lines and installation of a new 120/208 kVA 3-phase service, analysis and use of onsite aggregate as runway base material, pavement design, runway edge lighting, PAPI’s, runway striping, concrete turning aprons, electrical vault and radio controls. To avoid relocation of an existing high-pressure gas main a multibox culvert was designed to convey storm runoff beneath the runway which allowed the utilities to remain in place. The project also required the installation of a concrete protective structure over the existing gas main. To achieve the runway grades the project excavated over 160,000 CY of dirt and installed over 94,000 CY of embankment. The project utilized FAA Advisory Circular Construction Specifications for electrical work and TxDOT Standard Construction Specifications for dirt work, storm drain and paving. The project required coordination with the FAA for approval of the proposed runway and operating radio frequency.
